    Book details

A comprehensive examination of the way in which the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is implemented and policed. CITES is one of the oldest international enviromental agreements and has been responisble for some striking conservation successes. But, given the way it has evolved, there are also some critical weaknesses that unscrupulous countires and commercial interests can exploit, especially regarding information, institutions and enforcement. The convention needs reform and this book gives a trenchant critique, including practical and effective recommendations for change.

"This book is a must for environmental lawyers, law enforcers and policy-makers, but its clear style makes it accessible to all with an interest in conserving wildlife. It also has the potential to transform CITES. Based as it is on thorough research, its findings cannot be ignored." --David Shepherd, OBE FRSA "Not least among the merits of Dr. Reeve's analysis is the fact that rather than expounding 'law on the books,' its focus is the accuumulated lessons of 30 years of regime praxis--'rules in use,' as it were. That is why I am confident that this study will make a lasting contribution to our understanding of what works--and what doesn't work--in global environmental governance." --Peter H. Sand, From the Foreword

Review Text

I am a University student and I found this book very informative and it had all the information I needed. Very clear to understand, although can sometimes be a bit hard on the brain (to be expected with a CITES book though). The only bad point is that it doesn't have an index which makes finding certain things difficult.Overall, very impressed.
