    Book details

Jeffrey S. Levinton's highly acclaimed Marine Biology is regarded by many as the most authoritative text for undergraduate marine biology courses. Characterized by exceptionally clear and conversational writing style and comprehensive coverage, the text offers a sophisticated presentation featuring organismal and ecosystem ecology topics from an evolutionary perspective. Over the course of two editions, Levinton has balanced his organismal and ecological focus by including the latest developments from the world of molecular biology and presenting more discussion of oceanic processes. This thoroughly revised third edition includes the latest research developments in a new four-color format. It provides increased coverage of molecular biology and physical oceanography; greater emphasis on human impacts on the oceans, fisheries, and global climate change; new coverage of deep sea biology and polar oceans; additional quantitative material interwoven in the text, examples, and end of chapter problems; and highlights on current research efforts in the field.

"Levinton's book is easy to follow yet challenging and is at a perfect level for undergraduate biology majors."--Jayson Smith, California State University, Fullerton"Levinton's writing is accessible and engaging."--Erin Burge, Coastal Carolina University

Review Text

  • By Ms. C. Stone on 5 February 2010

This book is brilliant for anyone taking a course/module in marine biology or even anyone with a keen interest in this feild. It takes you through all the important areas, with helpful "hot topic" pages to link academic work with what's going on in the world. My lecturer is a little bit in love with this book and I can't blame him. It can be dipped into lightly, with vast amounts of bite-size summary information, or read thoroughly, with review questions designed to help bring together what you have read. A truly well written, academic book!

An absoutely amazing insight to the marine world. I bought this for my 13 year old 'budding marine biologist' forChristmas and I know once she opens the book she will not be able to put it down!

This book is given by the University I go to to all of its Marine Biology students. It is a brilliant book absolutely filled with important and valuable information for students, but also interesting information for those with an interest in the subject that would like to research further. I would definitely recommend.
